Berlin Center enters second phase after it has been successfully evaluated
Two years after its foundation, the Berlin Center for Digital Transformation is entering its second phase. External experts from industry and science have evaluated the Berlin Center positively. The Fraunhofer Executive Board announces further funding. The state of Berlin and the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft will additionally invest a total of six million euros in the Berlin Center for Digital Transformation until the end of 2020 for the new funding phase.
The Berlin Center for Digital Transformation is an innovation hub for the agile implementation of digital projects. As a companion of the digital transformation, the Berlin Center with its Transfer Centers and labs offers its partners the opportunity to quickly achieve concrete results with innovations. The portfolio ranges from support in the implementation of secure cyberphysical systems to the realization of application scenarios with the new 5G network technology. As a manufacturer-independent technology partner, the performance center and its partners define custom-fit industry 4.0 solutions and innovative business models for the Internet of Things. In laboratories and testbeds, ideas can be tested, risks and opportunities in experimental operations evaluated and critical success factors identified.
The successful cooperation of the four Fraunhofer Institutes FOKUS, HHI, IPK and IZM will be continued in the second phase. Prof. Manfred Hauswirth, speaker of the Berlin Center, is pleased: "Already in the first phase, the Berlin Center exceeded expectations. We work together with numerous customers and partners from Berlin and Brandenburg and specifically support the needs of SMEs and start-ups. The digital transformation is a reality, we want to help shape it with our services in the performance centre and strengthen the competitiveness of companies in Germany".
Michael Müller, Governing Mayor of Berlin and Senator for Higher Education and Research, emphasizes: "The Berlin Center for Digital Transformation is an integral part of Berlin's Digital Strategy. The successful first phase highlights how important the center is for shaping digital change, both for established companies and for young start-ups. Berlin benefits from this as a business and science location and can set visible impulses, from the testing of innovative technologies to the development of a future-oriented industry 4.0. This successful work will continue to support the state of Berlin in the next phase".
"Digital networking, artificial intelligence and new methods of data analysis are necessary to maintain the global competitiveness of the German economy. This applies in particular to small and medium-sized enterprises, because the digital technologies of the 21st century make it possible to develop completely new business models along the entire value chain," emphasizes Prof. Reimund Neugebauer, President of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. "Together with German companies, we are successfully and sustainably implementing the digital transformation at the Berlin Center with future technologies.
